My Boston: Robert Brown

July, 2008

Robert Brown, a principal at CBT Architects, takes us on a tour of Atelier 505, a mixed-use building whose "humanistic qualities" tie it into its South End neighborhood. Machado and Silvetti Associates were the design architects for Atelier 505, and ADD Inc. were executive architects. Brown, a former president of the Boston Society of Architects, lives near the building and experiences its architecture, its vibrancy, and oddities everyday.

Brown then takes us to Northeastern University, a campus that has "made a tremendous contribution to architecture" by using Boston's best local architects. Among the many individual buildings that Brown singles out: Office dA's Multi-faith Spiritual Center and its "perfect cubic quality."

Finally, Brown shows us the Prudential Center, a project he has worked on for 20 years. Among his insights: He reveals the design role played by Mayor Tom Menino. This led, after 27 design iterations, to a highly articulated piece of architecture, which has become an iconic part of the city's skyline. He describes how the mayor expressed an interest in "something much more interesting on the top" of the office tower at 111 Huntington.
