Like those objecting to the design of the Eisenhower Memorial I recall there was much naysaying directed at the then proposed Viet Nam memorial. Those objecting were basing their views on examples they were already familiar with, not from a design perspective of what such a memorial should express. Ike belongs as much to history and the American people as he does to his family and as such I would be inclined to trust the instincts, design skills and experience of Frank Gehry over that of Eisenhower\'s family members. \n\nThat said note that the clutter of proposed elements for the Viet Nam memorial that would have attempted to \"normalize\" or make more like past war monuments were shoved aside allowing the monument to make the approprate visual and emotional statement as Maya Lin, in designing her masterpiece, intended. While Grandaughter Susan has very perceptive perspectives we should be careful in trying to \"ordinaryise\" the Eisenhower Memorial before it gets built.<\/div>\n
