Site size: 9,366 sf
Project size: 4,485 sf (3,271 sf indoors)
Program: A young family of four sought a five-bedroom home with a pool in an artsy, eccentric neighborhood of Austin with strict zoning specifications and large existing trees.
Location: Austin’s Bouldin Creek neighborhood
Solution: Blurring lines between inside and outside, the architects designed a home with expansive common spaces and seamless connections to the pool court and backyard. The front masonry wall preserves privacy and frames indirect access to the front door, while an interior stair, separated from the living area by a wall of the same material, delineates public and private spaces.
Construction and materials: The architects planned the orientation and insulation of this steel and wood-frame house with an eye to the hot climate of central Texas. Operable windows, double-glazed with low-E coatings, provide cross ventilation. Sealed concrete floors on the lower level further the muted palate of the masonry, while wood floors and red cedar paneling on the second story add warmth. Skylights pull natural light deep into the home.
