I\'m not so sure that going to GM or Google after architecture school is a bad thing. Architectural education has always been good preparation for other things. Now, with design thoroughly imbricated in the stuff and experiences of our everyday lives, from products to environments to the acquisition of knowledge itself, architecture schools are right to be thoughtfully expanding their curricula to anticipate alternative futures. And students are right to take advantage of a liberal education that combines technologies, humanities, and progressive social and environmental agendas.<\/div>\n

\"And just as concerning was the almost 12 percent rise in students saying they plan to work for a nonarchitectural corporation such as Google or General Motors.\"\n\nWhy is working for an employer other than an architecture firm concerning? Should not graduates pursue their careers as they wish; besides perhaps, the salary is higher.\n\nAs well, I doubt the profession can absorb the full number of architectural graduates each year; we want graduates to pursue careers beyond architecture.<\/div>\n

Some schools teach students to be architects, some schools train students in what they need to get their first job. These are entirely different approaches and produce fundamentally different architects.<\/div>\n
