For instance the highly glazed ground floor facades don\'t cause the building to look like it "floats above the ground". this is a cliche that needs to go away. It doesn\'t look like it floats and why would you want it to. It\'s made of concrete for goodness sake. The building should look like it is sturdy and will hold up for a very long time. And the statements about how it expresses the values of our new century -" tolerance ,openness, transparency, permeability, sharing . . ." This is self-evidently a lie. Just because there are glass curtain walls doesn\'t mean you can enter as if it were a department store. Columbia is an elitist school that is very hard to get into and the surrounding residents cannot just enter and enjoy themselves - and why should they? Columbia\'s mission is to educate highly intelligent people in the highest level of current academic material. Why pretend to be a welfare organization? As for the material meant to recall the industrial past of the area. What value is there in that? Industrial looking buildings are thought to be offensive and unattractive. Besides all neighborhoods change over time. Why should you pick a previous era to try to imitate if it wasn\'t related in values to your current project. This is all verbal sludge. Finally the building doesn\'t seamlessly blend into the urban surroundings. It sticks out like a sore thumb. Who are these spokespersons trying to kid? The project is what it is and it looks like what it does (basically like a wedge of cheese). But that OK. If you have no better justification for your design just tell the truth and stop trying to fantasize it as some kind of politically correct delusion.

 Post Comment
 Report Abusive Comment

Columbia's Manhattanville Campus

Erika Rosenfeld

September 25, 2018

Notwithstanding the three completed buildings on Columbia\'s new campus (actually in West Harlem, an association the university is at pains to avoid) and the master plan, which I\'ve studied, I remain deeply skeptical of the university\'s claims for a welcoming and beneficial relationship with the community, in which I live. The university has a long history of turning its back on the Morningside Heights community--not for nothing is its main campus called Fortress Columbia. It will take a great deal to persuade me that Manhattanville campus, even with the extensive glazing of the buildings and much-vaunted public pedestrian walkways, will be any different. (Transparency note: I was a graduate student at Columbia and now live a two-minute walk from the new campus, with an unimpeded view of the construction from my apartment.)

 Post Comment
 Report Abusive Comment

[No title]

Emily Brown

December 27, 2018

It was nice to have a look at the place Columbia\'s Manhattanville Campus which ground floor named as the Forum.
