Location: Austin, Texas

Project size: 1,930 square feet

Program: The clients, a young creative couple with two small children, wanted a modest house with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and living spaces with strong connections to private outdoor areas. A masonry wall in front of the house forms a small courtyard, visually shielding front rooms from the street.

Solution: The house is a rectilinear stucco mass carved to shape light and space. Deep, shaded openings connect the interior and exterior, admitting abundant natural light to both levels. The ground level is an open room with an uninterrupted ceiling plane; partial height Douglas Fir cabinetry walls define individual spaces while maintaining a feeling of openness. Each room has its own access to an exterior deck and a clerestory window. A lightwell, placed at the center of the house, connects the two floors visually.

Construction and materials: The house is a wood framed structure clad in stucco. The structural frame is exposed at the porch in the rear.
