Midcentury houses have their charms, but they often lack the airy yet comfortable atmosphere that contemporary dwellers covet. Such was the case with a 60-year-old residence in the Minneapolis area that was recently overhauled by local firm Strand Design in collaboration with the builder and real-estate company Str8 Modern.
Situated in a leafy suburban neighborhood, the 3,225-square-foot house—now called Golden Valley Mid-Century Modern—was built in 1961 (architect unknown). Roughly T-shaped in plan, the wood-framed building contains a main level and basement. Over time, original features remained largely untouched.
