Architects create designs. The physical task of translating those designs into buildings is done by others.”?
Am I wrong to think that architectural design is inseparable from the material realization of a work? Am I sentimental to value the patina of time on old stone and paint, the historic depth revealed by historic ways of building? Could a medieval cathedral be rebuilt today with any resemblance to the original? Of course not.

Is this separation of the design from the work a pernicious leftover of the 1970s, when wannabe architects had no commissions, and passed off their conceptual drawings as “real architecture”? And of American practice, where a back-office team of specialists struggles to realize the genius designs of front-office whiz kids? Fortunately, architecture and building remain inseparable in Spain, where I am based, and the results demonstrate what that integrity can mean.

 Post Comment
 Report Abusive Comment

Manipulating Meis

william j. devlin aia, inc., ARCHITECT

November 16, 2022

Nice work with those dorms and their related facilities.
I\'m not among the Meis-mice, but ---
Yes, those buildings needed serious up-grading from their cold-&-cold "HVAC" ("Help, Very Aggravating Cold"). The health of the students should be a top priority!
The next aspect, well-met, is, indeed, replicating original appearance as closely as possible.
