I knew Robert Moses and Jane Jacob’s when I was a housing intern. I had dinner with him,his wife and my mentor/boss, Roger Schafer. Moses was responsible for most of the Mitchell Lama buildings, Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village. He tried to create eat-in kitchens in public housing, which he supported. He spent time in Washington too assure that federal programs would work in New York City. When I described my problems with an FHA insured, early Section 8 rehab project, he asked me how many units. When I answered ,”119”, he laughed and said, “that’s all.So much work for so few units.” I admired him because he got things done. I also met Jane Jacobs, who did not want any low income housing in her neighborhood.<\/div>\n

In reading Caro\'s wonderful biography of Moses I was struck just as much by his personal character defects.\nHe was a cruel man to those closest to him and a major snob. He was oblivious to the needs of those \nin need and at the bottom of it all he was a racist.<\/div>\n
