The National Gallery proposal is troubling both architecturally and historically. No Grade 1 listed building should be subject to such vandalism, and no reputable architectural journal should support architects or proposals that denigrate landmarks.\n\nDoing a fine job at the Neue Galerie years ago does not give free rein to obliterate and remove historic fabric at other institutions. The Frick proposal may be less egregious than what was originally proposed but it nonetheless fundamentally changes an important institution in unfortunate and irreparable ways. \n\nA better focus for Architectural Record would be to explore why museum trustees prefer building projects over maintenance and preservation and the connections between trustees and architect selection. As someone who regularly enjoys visiting the Neu Gallerie and the Frick Collection when we visit New York, I look forward to seeing how the addition to the Frick improves the visitor experience.  Her restaging of their art collection in the Breuer building on Madison Avenue was brilliant and really enhanced enjoyment of the art.  What I like most about Annabelle is that she is always thinking about the ultimate user of the building in her work, which for public institutions like art museums is the way it should be.
