From dusk last night until dawn this morning, the Tribute in Light installation pierced the night sky of New York City to honor the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The tribute was first illuminated in March 2002 — I recall seeing it from Brooklyn and stopping in the middle of street in awe at this simple (but in fact, highly complex) temporary memorial. In this video, lighting designer Paul Marantz shares his story of Fisher Marantz Stone’s design and execution of the Tribute in collaboration with several artists and architects. Funded up to the tenth anniversary, the Tribute is now dependant on funding for future displays.

Updated on 9/13/11: To make a donation to help keep the lights funded for another year, check out the Municipal Art Society of New York site.
