Ricardo Legorreta, the prominent Mexican architect best known for his Camino Real hotel in Mexico City and Pershing Square in Los Angeles, among other brightly colored projects—and who just last year won Japan's Praemium Imperiale—died on Friday at age 80.

According to an Associated Press report on the Washington Post's website, Mexican authorities confirmed his death but did not give a cause.

The San Antonio Express and the San Jose Mercury News both ran obituaries over the weekend, and Blair Kamin at the Chicago Tribune posted about Legorreta on his blog earlier today.
