From droughts and hurricanes to floods, ice storms and wildfires, natural and manmade hazardous events can wreak havoc on the built environment … and that includes indoor spaces. For healthcare settings in particular, maintaining interior integrity, safety, and occupant health standards are integral to overall indoor environmental quality (IEQ), which has proven effects on patient outcomes and staff/visitor well-being. The consequences of disasters can include increased airborne contaminant concentrations and challenges in providing acceptable environmental conditions during an event or during the recovery period.
Additionally, during planning and designing stages, it is key to do so with an eye toward mitigating the potential for out-of-control costs that might arise from operational failures. Incorporating more resilient performance right from the start can help reduce costs by improving building performance throughout the healthcare facilty’s lifecycle.
