Designing for Resilience

More and more, Southern California is the target of some of nature’s worst disasters: earthquakes, drought, and wild fires. Three leading architects will present architecture at every scale—from infrastructure to commercial, civic and public projects—and show how they incorporate resilient features to anticipate and weather such catastrophes. They will also discuss design strategies that can help mitigate the climate crisis that is increasing the frequency and severity of drought and fires.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain the role of land-use policy in exacerbating the risk of wild fires.
  2. Describe landscape and architectural strategies that can mitigate the risk of wild fires and the mud slides that often follow them.
  3. Discuss how infrastructure designed to elevated seismic standards can create social resilience in and among underserved communities.
  4. Discuss landscape and architectural tactics for conserving water appropriate for California.

Registration is complimentary, but limited to architects, engineers and designers.
