A playing field in front distances the building from the street.   The architects salvaged beams from two razed elementary schools and reused them as arching columns.   The library is a sky-lit space, perfect for curling up with a book. Repurposed columns and a sculptural-wood ceiling are on display.   Unlike many school hallways, Machias’s is inviting and filled with light.   Concrete shingles are more durable than cedar and still manage to evoke old barns.
