Though architecture offices may have the reputation of being grueling, inhospitable places to work, Gensler seems to be making progress in shaking off this stereotype.

The career search website Glassdoor has ranked the international firm the 49th best place to work in the United States. The site’s annual “Employees’ Choice” list is based on anonymous reviews submitted by at least 75 employees of each company during a 12-month period, and included only one architecture practice.

Architectural Record covered Gensler’s new offices in this year’s Good Design Is Good Business issue. According to Andy Cohen, co-CEO of the company with Diane Hoskins, each time the firm moves staff into a new facility, they treat the space as “a laboratory that demonstrates our principles and our research.”

Despite slipping more than 10 spots from last year's list (they ranked 38th), the firm managed to narrowly beat out Wegmans Food Markets, ranked 50th, but was surpassed by QuikTrip, the convenience store chain.

But compared to peers in the profession, Gensler leads the pack: The firm has held the top spot on Architectural Record’s annual Top 300 Firms list for five consecutive years.
