Color is a force with the ability to change a space, a mood or even a mindset. This is especially true for architectural interior design, where there is opportunity to use color intentionally. Color has the ability to affect experience by enhancing the architectural form. In this webinar, presenters will discuss the color and material choices of several projects, focusing on design requirements, constraints and desired effects.

Wid Chapman, AIA, received his architectural education at the Rhode Island School of Design. He is a former chair of the Interior Design Department at Parsons School of Design, where he currently serves on its senior faculty. Wid has guest lectured in the United States and globally in Brazil, the Dominican Republic, France, India, Malaysia, and Singapore. A lifestyle design authority, he is coauthor of the topical books Home Design in an Aging World and Unassisted Living.

David Ling founded David Ling Architects in 1992, establishing an international practice in the United States, Europe and Asia. Composed of exhibition spaces, creative offices, high-end retail, high-end residences and institutional spaces Ling’s work has received numerous international awards, including Interiors Magazine’s Annual Awards for Best Retail Design and Best Office Design; Interior Design Magazine’s Future Furniture Award, Best of Year Award, and Kitchen and Bath Designer Leader Award; the Municipal Arts Society’s National Design Award; Architectural Bienal Miami + Beach Gold and Silver medals; Benjamin Moore’s Hue Award for Best Residential Interiors; New York Magazine’s Top 100 Architects and Decorators Award; London’s Design Partnership Award for Best Retail Design; and Best Exhibition Design at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair and London’s Grosvernor House Art & Antiques Fair.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss why color is an important design decision
  2. List two ways color can impact interior architectural design
  3. Explain how both natural and artificial lighting affect color
  4. Describe the effects of color - visually, psychologically and symbolically.
