Venice Architecture Biennale 2004: George Yu Architects
George Yu has designed over 65 projects including the prototypes and rollout of fashion boutiques for Max Studio worldwide. After working for Morphosis, he founded Los Angeles-based George Yu Architects in 1992 and collaborated with Jason King as Design Office, which was included in Record's Design Vanguard 2000. Yu is currently on the faculty of SCI-Arc. He won Canada’s prestigious Prix de Rome in 2000.
Presenting a new model for shopping centers, the firm’s proposal weaves elements of conventional shopping centers with those of big-box super centers into a landscape of terraced residential buildings and public park space. The large-scale model consists of a series of highly transformable spatial types that accommodate a wide variety of programs. Departing from the norm of shopping centers over the past fifty years, this model’s design is based on intense integration of both building and landscape.
