Location: Argyll, Scotland
Project size: 474 square feet (extension and internal alterations)

Program: This project consists of internal remodeling and a modest, one-story extension to a Victorian house surrounded by a private garden in Argyll, Scotland. After restoring and upgrading the living room and bedrooms, Studio KAP’s clients, a couple who have lived in the house for some time, wanted to address the rear of the property. The aim was to create visual links between the kitchen, often used to entertain guests, and nearby spaces—inside and out. (The rocky hill behind the house is an active refuge for birds, deer, and other wildlife.)

Design Solution: The clients were interested in creating something different yet well-crafted. They wished to enlarge the existing kitchen, which was in poor condition but nevertheless continued to be the social center of the house, to create a more hospitable space. While contemporary in form, the extension is configured to sit sympathetically with the existing building and transform the quality of the kitchen space. Its overall massing is designed to avoid interfering with the existing roof pitch and eaves, reinforcing its intrinsic ancillary role and underpinning the main house’s existing architectural presence.

Structure and Materials: Weathering steel cladding and aluminum frames were used for the extension, contrasting with the white rendered walls and traditional slate roof of the Victorian house. The oxidized panels provide a robust, maintenance-free jacket that will endure Scottish winters and echoes Scottish agricultural structures.
