The past, in all its ugly truths, needs to inform how we plan the future of our cities.

In this issue of RECORD, we present our annual feature, Design Vanguard, which first launched in the magazine more than 20 years ago.

Skyscrapers are tied to the fortunes of cities. So it may seem a strange moment to celebrate tall buildings, when people are questioning—in the U.S., at least—the future of the metropolis.

Beyond Covid lies the opportunity to rebuild the civic realm in innovative ways around infrastructure, transportation, housing, health care, and public space—and in the process, seriously address equity, access, and sustainability.

Cities have survived wars, depressions, and natural disasters—and they can survive Covid too.
