This course provides information about contemporary direct-vent gas fireplaces, the different styles available, and the construction and safety requirements for incorporating them into a design project. Information is presented in a format that begins with the various fireplace models and continues through the product specifications, safety clearances, efficiency benefits, installation and design requirements including drawing details and sample applications. This presentation includes slides that follow through the design and building stages in the order that a typical project would progress, allowing the architect and design professional to take a lead role in the successful design and installation of this element in the construction project.
Learning Objectives:
- Assess and apply the safety clearances, venting, and framing requirements for both contemporary and traditional designs.
- Distinguish the environmental and efficiency benefits of a direct vent gas fireplace with the added safety of cool wall technology vs. a traditional wood burning and/or open faced fireplace.
- Design details that will allow the installed fireplaces to perform as intended by the manufacturer and as desired for the project owner.
- Recognize and understand the differences between double glass and screen safety barriers.
