Completion Date: May 2009

Owner: City of San Diego

Program: A 22,000-square-foot police station and a 5,500-square-foot vehicle maintenance facility set on six acres.

Design concept and solution: The architects wanted to design a police station that would not appear institutional, contrasting displeasingly to the mostly residential context. To accomplish this, they designed the building to run parallel to the street to conceal the rear parking lot and vehicle maintenance facility. An eight-foot-high protective concrete wall was required for the building, so a central atrium was created to allow natural daylight into the structure. This natural lighting scheme and other sustainable features, such as photovoltaic power, contributed to the project’s LEED Silver certification.
