Program: A 7,800-square-foot park center, 6,085-square-foot teen center, 1,500-square-foot patio, and 5,300-square-foot community center set on 9.4 acres.

Design concept and solution: In 1999, Koning Eizenberg Architecture and Spurlock Poirier Landscape Architects were commissioned to design the Virginia Avenue Park expansion. The firms were given the task of creating a community resource that would help unite diverse cultures within a dense neighborhood. The city acquired an additional 3.2 acres for the project and the architects designed pedestrian paths to connect the existing park with the new acreage and pavilion to the north. The public restrooms on the southern end are adjacent to a new children’s water-play area and playground. A former warehouse was converted into a teen center with a courtyard nearby. The Police Activities League building houses a gymnasium, dance and fitness studio, employment information and referral services office, administrative offices, and a police sub-station.

Gross square footage:
The Park Center:  7,955 sq. ft.
2101 (Teen Center) 6,086 sq. ft.

The Patio:  1,507 sq. ft.
Thelma Terry Community Center: 5,315 sq. ft.

Total:  20,863 sq. ft.

Site size: 9.4. acres

Total construction cost: $9.9 millions
