Since it was constructed in 1932, this building, originally an Eastern Orthodox church, has served a range of functions, including housing offices, apartments, and a restaurant. For the structure’s latest incarnation, as the Sinan Books Poetry Store, Shanghai-based Wutopia Lab used 45 tons of steel to create soaring bookshelves, which morph into a beehive-shaped armature. Daylight spills into the shop through the original domed ceiling, reinventing the former church as a new kind of modern sacred space.
