2025 Architectural Record Awards Winner: Pictograma Winery
Ensenada, Mexico

The Pictograma Winery—part of the Banyan Tree Veya resort—is designed to reflect its setting, the Valle de Guadalupe, the most prominent wine region of Mexico’s Baja California. Designed by Rojkind Arquitectos and Amasa Estudio, the 21,000-square-foot winery has an 82-foot-radius circular plan, with 11 barrel vaults arrayed around a courtyard, each of which houses various viniculture operations: tasting rooms, fermentation tanks, bottling facilities, storage, and a laboratory. The architects worked to mitigate the project’s environmental impact by taking advantage of thermal mass, natural ventilation, and solar orientation. Local brick and pigmented concrete engage an architectural language that resonates with the local climate, rugged topography, and history.
