A 5,800-square-foot house nestled into the hillside on Mulholland Drive offers clear views of the San Fernando Valley, as well as relief from western sunlight. In addition to generating a stepped profile for the building, its three tiered levels (including the roof of the guest house) also provide patios. The elastomeric coating on the roofs helps with energy savings.
Visitors enter the property via an elevated driveway that gradually descends from Mulholland Drive to the house. Once they’ve arrived, guests can ascend stairs to the uppermost roof deck or enter the house into an open dining room, kitchen, and living space. Stairs from this mezzanine level lead down to a formal living room, with access to an infinity pool. Bedrooms occupy the level below.
The architects, a six-year-old firm founded by Arshia Mahmoodi, sheathed the wood frame house in white plaster cement. Except for some walnut closets, doors, and floors, the white palette continues inside with porcelain tile floors and white lacquer cabinetry.
Mahmoodi notes that the house is located near John Lautner’s 1960 Chemosphere and Errol Flynn’s ranch, both of which inspired him in the design, along with David Lynch’s 2001 film “Mulholland Dr.”
