Chicago

Site Size: 8,800 square feet

Project Size: 5,800 square feet

Program: The clients sought a house that was durable, sustainable, and offered privacy in an urban environment. They originally wanted to convert an existing warehouse into a house, but decided that to achieve their programmatic goals it would be easier to build an entirely new house.

Location: The site is located mid-block in a dense residential neighborhood in Chicago on three small city lots. The site is three feet below sidewalk grade ' a typical condition for the area.

Solution: The house follows an L-shaped plan set around a central courtyard. The first floor contains the kitchen, dining and living spaces with floor-to-ceiling windows. The second floor has private spaces while the third floor features a study, a guestroom and a roof deck with views of the Chicago skyline.

Construction methods: A concrete foundation supports a steel structure with brick masonry veneer. Floor-to-ceiling steel-framed windows enclose the first floor while the second and third floors feature aluminum and wood windows. Finish materials include reconstituted wood veneer, walnut flooring, stainless steel, granite trim and countertops, porcelain mosaic tile, and hand-patinized copper wall panels.

Materials:
Masonry: Norman brick, Yankee Hill Brick ; Roman brick, Green Leaf Brick Company
Green Roof: LiveRoof tray system
