This webinar is part of the Custom Home Academy

This live webinar will take a look at a number residential building projects that have embraced current trends in custom home architecture and design. In the wake of the pandemic, comfortable living spaces have become more than just a matter of aesthetics. We will examine unique projects that have embraced trends and strategies that include bringing nature into the home, integrating outdoor spaces, open concept, workout studios, flexible space to accommodate remote school and work-from-home needs, daylighting/natural light, incorporating modern and vintage elements, color trends—to name a few.

Our three presenters will detail the design challenges and solutions used in each of these remarkable residences. The presentations will be followed by a moderated discussion focused on how these innovative custom home projects, noted below, address several key issues, including cost, aesthetics, drivers, design constraints and opportunities.

Chris Johns, AIA, NCARB is a founding partner leading the Boston studio for ThoughtCraft Architects. His award-winning full-service architecture firm balances innovation and spirited exploration with logic and precision on a wide range of projects. Throughout his career, Chris has consistently created homes and multifamily buildings that improve people’s lives and enrich communities by weaving the human experience with both natural and urban surroundings.

Chris will present on the Chatham Residence project located in Chatham County, NC, a home conceived around the ideas of movement, light, and Zen. Project highlights include Shou Sugi Ban Accoya wood siding and high-density cement panels, passive sunlight controls, outdoor spaces, and design sensibilities with aging-in-place in mind.

John Patrick Winberry, AIA is the founding partner, chief wrangler, and architect at THE UP STUDIO. As such, John finds the genesis of a new project to be the most thrilling stage of production. His favorite moments are when a big idea or design concept is presented to clients and they begin to feel the same enthusiasm that he and his team feel while creating it.

John will present Harbor Hideaway, an award-winning single-family residence in the centuries-old whaling village of Sag Harbor, NY. The property is situated in the center of a small peninsula and seemingly on one of the only lots in the quaint neighborhood without direct water views. However, by flipping the traditional orientation of the home and providing ample roof access, the two-story home becomes a stunning lookout.

Joeb Moore, FAIA / NCARB is principal of Joeb Moore + Partners, Architects, an architecture and design firm in Greenwich, Connecticut. The firm’s work and process focus on the relationship between landscape, architecture, and art. He has taught architectural design studios at Yale University, Catholic University and Barnard/Columbia University. Moore received a B.S. and an M.Arch. from Clemson University.

Joeb will present an innovative, award-winning Connecticut remodel project, River House. As Joeb describes it, River House is a story of the convergence of art, architecture, landscape and family life. It is a story about time, and a house as a kind of time machine and a structure of possibility. In this instance, it unfolds over 30 years for 2 generations of family through a series of renovations and expansions that trace an evolution in how we live, how life changes from era to era, and generation to generation.

The presentations will be followed by a moderated discussion focused on how these innovative custom home projects address several key issues.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe emerging design strategies and trends for custom homes, particularly those born out of the challenges of the pandemic.
  2. Examine the increased importance of flexible space in home design as it relates to current work/study and lifestyle needs.
  3. Discuss the role of outdoor spaces and nature in terms of enhancing residential design.
  4. Describe the specific design approaches and materials that were incorporated into the featured custom home projects presented.
