Site size: 7,000 sf Project size: 2,450 sf

Program: Originally built in 1939, this flat-roofed Art Moderne house with a curved, speed-striped stucco wall, nautical-inspired detailing including a porthole window, and a prominent front door was purchased in 2013 by new owners who wanted to restore it and increase square footage while remaining respectful of the designated heritage building’s past.

Location: Westdale, Hamilton, Ontario

Solution: The design team fully restored the house, adding a glass-wrapped second story with a curved corner to mirror the original solid curve below. A rear dining room was also added, along with a loggia that opens the kitchen to the backyard. Most of the interior walls were demolished to increase natural light and openness, and two of the original three bedrooms remain (one was repurposed to create a mudroom off the backyard and small living room nook). Nonetheless, much of the home’s historic character and detailing was preserved, including the original ceiling plasterwork and marble fireplace in the main floor living room.

Construction and materials: The concrete block structure of the original building serves as a base for the addition of wood, steel, and glass. The renovation included significant repair work, such as replacing the original stucco cladding with synthetic EIFS, upgrading the waterproofing, and adding an airtight and freshly insulated envelope with true-to-original windows. A bright turquoise stove and fridge brought from the owners’ former home served as the design starting point for the kitchen, and the designers added minimalist custom millwork throughout.
