Nick Deaver Architect

Site size: 7,080 sf
Project size: 1,900

Program: The architect renovated and expanded a central Texas cottage for clients who work from home and enjoy hosting social gatherings.

Location: Austin’s historic Travis Heights neighborhood.

Solution: The architect removed a previous addition to the home, then added a new wing with the master suite, a glazed dining terrace, a sitting space with a wood-burning stove, and utility rooms. The low sloping addition continues the theme of terraced floor planes, also seen on the front deck. This subtle drop maximized floor space without the use of many stairs, while adding a floating effect to the addition.

Construction and materials: The addition employs structural steel; the rest is stick frame construction. Extensive glazing, including the glass-walled terrace, large master window, and large sliding glass doors, create dramatic connections to the outdoors. In a nod to the southwestern vernacular style, uncovered shiplap on walls and the kitchen island is balanced by quieter material choices like cold-rolled blackened plate steel, soapstone countertops, and carrera marble for bathroom floors and a custom vanity. Mechanicals are concelaed below the addition.

Completion date: October 2015
