Site size: 5 acres

Project size: 640 square feet (remodel + addition)

Program: A single-family house was expanded to include a new guest suite; the existing bedroom, master bath, kitchen, and family room were remodeled.

Location: Los Gatos, California

Solution: The existing one-story house is anchored by a new two-story volume—a punctuation mark and counterpoint to the existing composition. The design of the expansion and remodeling is inspired by the textures of the site: boulders, bark, and leaves. The addition is clad in traditional Japanese Shou Sugi Ban burnt cedar siding.

Construction and materials: Wood frame construction with shou sugi ban burnt wood siding.
