Site size: 8.5 acres

Project size: 8,250 square feet

Program: Located along a ridgeline with sweeping mountain views, the design goals for the renovation of the house, designed by Ellie Brickham—the first female architect in Aspen—included: connecting the interior to the surrounding landscape; accommodating a flexible furniture plan, as well as specific artworks; and creating visual connections between distinct interior spaces.

Location: Aspen, Colorado

Solution: The design process consisted of remediating previous renovations and additions while maximizing existing spaces to accommodate a diverse collection of mixed-media art pieces. The interior is oriented along a central defining spine, where metal walls meet stone and evolve into glass as movement through the house progresses from public to private spaces. Strong indoor-outdoor connections are established with floor-to-ceiling glazed sliding doors. All existing wood-burning fireplaces were revived.

Construction and materials: The structure is glued laminated timber, with steel columns where needed.
