Studio Workshop

Project size: 2,400 square feet

Program: The design of this two-bedroom dwelling is inspired by the local vernacular, and maximizes views to the ocean beyond.

Location: Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

Solution: Located on a steep west-facing site, the architects designed a concrete mass to embed solid foundations. Together with a green roof, the concrete, which helps with thermal massing, contributes to a passive design. A latticed wood screen wraps around the top level, utilizing a system of complex joints, and paying homage to local traditions of timber crafstmanship seen in the lowland stilt houses.

Construction and materials: The house’s main material is poured concrete. The exterior screens were constructed from pine, and together contain over 2,200 individual pieces of wood.

Additional Information

Completion date: 2017

Gross square footage: 2,400 square feet

Total project cost: withheld
