It owes its distinctive appearance to a unique multilayered facade: wrapped in a louvered glass screen is a structural concrete shell punched with thousands of operable windows. Thanks to its high thermal mass, the building functions entirely without air-conditioning.

Last month's answer: The Frankfurt Kitchen was designed by the Austrian architect Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky. Conceived in the 1920s as part of Ernst May’s plan to construct modern, affordable public housing across the city of Frankfurt, Schütte-Lihotzky’s design was incorporated into roughly 10,000 housing units— and in subsequent decades became a model for new kitchens around the world.
