Location: Ocean Springs, Mississippi
Project size: 1,680 square feet

Program: Located on a flat site along the Gulf Coast, Olson Kundig designed a resilient residence raised 23 feet above grade to endure the storms that are common here. The primary home of a young family, the program includes a kitchen, living room, exterior deck, primary suite, two bedrooms, and a bathroom all on one level.

Design Solution: A rusted steel exterior, treated to withstand the humid climate, is a striking contrast against the green and blue landscape. Here, the advantage lies in elevation: the home is raised on steel piers to mimic the height of the surrounding trees and to distance itself from the otherwise flat ground.

The main level is accessible via a black steel stair, with raised storage compartments, anticipating potential flooding, tucked below. At the top of the stairs, a catwalk extends toward the tree canopy in one direction and toward the front door in the other. Inside, in the foyer, a custom wood bench provides warm contrast to the cool concrete floor.

The home’s central axis is oriented north–south. At the south end, the open kitchen and living rooms look onto the adjacent wetland and out to the horizon. A screened-in porch cantilevered over the landscape is a contemporary homage to this traditional Southern feature and promotes passive ventilation throughout the home. A walnut butcher-block island anchors the kitchen while also functioning as a dining table.

The primary suite extends to the east, capturing views of the trees and the bayou. Its spacious bathroom is tiled throughout to house both a shower and bathtub. At the home’s north end, a large children’s playroom features a “roof kicker”—an elevated roof section and operable window that draw air into and through the home.

Structure and Materials: The home is raised 23 feet on steel piers, with no cross bracing due to storm surge requirements, and painted in a high-performance coating. Storage compartments are located at the ground level but are raised to protect against potential flooding. The rusted steel cladding is pre-treated to remain protected in the salty, humid environment. The interior balances durable concrete floors with custom wood casework.
