Location: Eden, Utah
Project size: 5,1900 square feet

Program: Perched 8,750 feet above sea level on the remote slopes of Powder Mountain, Overlook Residence faces a confluence of seismic instability, altitude, and deep snow loads. Just as critical as the engineering challenges is the sensitivity of the site itself—a delicate alpine environment, where flora and fauna thrive in extremes. Designing here means acknowledging the house as a guest that must tread lightly in a setting of profound natural beauty. The clients—a nature-loving family—sought a multi-generational ski-in/ski-out retreat that would honor its mountain context, prioritize sustainability, and reflect a design ethos of restraint, clarity, and purpose.

Design Solution: The Overlook Residence reimagines the alpine chalet as a compact, climate-resilient refuge. Tucked into the slope, the structure follows the natural topography in both plan and section. Its angled roof echoes the incline of the mountain, aiding with snow shedding and preventing dangerous icicle buildup. It also helps the house recede visually into its surroundings. A super-insulated envelope, furfuryl-modified wood cladding, triple-glazed windows, and standing-seam metal roof meet the rigorous standards of the Wildland-Urban Interface Code, providing robust snow and fire resilience.

Inside, every inch is purposeful detailed to create a ski retreat. The entry is rugged ski zone that transitions into a refined mudroom and then the warm interiors beyond—a sequence designed for both utility and sensory reset. The main level centers on shared living spaces wrapped in wood, offering a tranquil retreat for family life. A bunk room accommodates all four grandchildren, while two ensuite bedrooms enable privacy and flexibility for extended family. Furnishings, custom-designed or curated by Studio Ma, extend material integrity throughout.

Located within a mountain community shaped by sustainability-minded design guidelines—guidelines to which Studio Ma contributed nearly a decade earlier—the home is both a private retreat and a statement of its residents’ values. Rather than dominating the landscape, the residence enters into dialogue with it. Quiet and durable, it demonstrates that environmental stewardship and refined architecture are not only compatible but mutually reinforcing.

Structure and Materials: Seismic and snow load demands were resolved through a precisely engineered foundation and rigid-frame window wall system, delivering expansive views of the Wasatch Range without compromising structural integrity. The all-electric home uses passive ventilation—drawing air through differences in pressure—and a radiant floor heating system, enhancing both energy efficiency and indoor air quality.
