Bët-bi Museum (1-2)
In Senegal’s Kaolack region, this museum for the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation and Le Korsa acts as a public gathering place. Drawing inspiration from the Saloum Kingdom, Mandinka monumental architecture, and Serer cosmology, its triangular geometry organizes interconnected programs. Galleries are below grade, giving the land primacy while creating a contemplative setting for art and culture. Images © Mariam Issoufou

Hikma Community Complex
In Dandaji, Niger, Issoufou pairs adaptive reuse with new construction. The project, published in the June 2019 issue of RECORD, involved adding onto an existing mosque, transforming it into a hybrid library, with classrooms and workshops. Locally sourced materials, high thermal mass, and natural-ventilation strategies reduce reliance on concrete and mechanical cooling.

Gourmega
This 670-square-foot zero-waste restaurant in New York City opened earlier this year. It shifts from daytime café to evening supper club with a 14-person communal table. A back-of-house soup kitchen links the compact hospitality space to nonprofit Rethink Food’s broader meal-distribution network.
