In De Matos Ryan’s renovation of York Theatre Royal, sensitive and ingenious lighting plays a vital role in lending coherence to the diverse parts of a building that has been much altered over its 272-year history.
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) today announced the winners of this year’s National Awards, which recognize the best new buildings built in the United Kingdom.
Site size: 3,810 square feet Project size: 3,200 square feet Program: A dilapidated 18-century barn renovated for a modern residence. Location: A rural site in South Yorkshire, in northern England. Solution: The architects inserted a second floor into the two-story-high stone barn, yet managed to keep the original sense of the open plan. Two bedrooms on the upper floor are connected by a walkway with a glass balustrade that overlooks the living and dining areas. Construction and materials: The architects inserted a steel frame to support deteriorating walls, with a ring beam running around the perimeter of the kitchen area.
Portal to the Past: Denton Corker Marshall created a forest of columns for the Stonehenge Exhibition and Visitor Centre that respects the ancient monument it serves.
Conversation with Mackintosh: An addition to a Scottish landmark engages the old architecture with design strategies that sometimes complement and sometimes contrast with the original building.
Building directly opposite Charles Rennie Mackintosh's famed Glasgow School of Art, as Steven Holl has done, is simultaneously a plum job and the commission from hell.
