The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has long been due for a major overhaul, according to its director Michael Govan and the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Peter Zumthor, who has been commissioned to re-think the museum’s east campus. “If you were to restore it, it would not really work because I think it never really worked well as a museum,” said Zumthor at a packed public conversation with Govan at the museum on Monday night.

Peter Zumthor Wins 2009 Pritzker Prize

Peter Zumthor, the reclusive Swiss architect widely revered for a small yet powerful body of work, is the 2009 laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize. The Hyatt Foundation, which administers the award, announced his selection today. “Peter Zumthor is a master architect admired by his colleagues around the world for work that is focused, uncompromising, and exceptionally determined,” the jury said in its citation.
