Guess the Architect

Guess the Architect: September 2025

A monthly contest from the editors of RECORD asks you to guess the architect for a work of historical importance.

Clue: Drenched in sun, remote from civilization, perched atop a promontory overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, this reddish-pink villa is the product of a series of disagreements between client and architect. The strict rationalism of the architect’s initial design was undercut by the idiosyncrasies of the client, a colorful writer who added the wedge-shaped outdoor stair and other elements.

By entering, you have a chance to win a $500 Visa gift card. Deadline to enter is the last day of each month at 5:00pm EST.

Last month's answer: Located on the Sunset Boulevard strip in Hollywood, California, the Cinerama Dome was designed by Welton Becket and Associates. Despite the quick failure of the three-projector Cinerama format that it was designed to showcase, the theater remained in operation until 2020, when it closed during the Covid-19 pandemic. Its owners have not yet detailed reopening plans.
