Following the May presentation of the Pritzker Architecture Prize to its 54th laureate, China’s Liu Jiakun, the prize organizers have released video capturing the award ceremony. This year, the event was held at Jean Nouvel–designed Louvre Abu Dhabi. Nouvel himself, the 2008 laureate, was in attendance along with other past recipients including Riken Yamamoto (2024), David Chipperfield (2023), and Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal (2021). The ceremony marked the first to be held since the passing of prize co-founder Cindy Pritzker, who died in March of this year at the age of 101. The Chicago-based philanthropist established the prestigious international architecture award with her husband, the late Jay Pritzker, in 1979. (Philip Johnson was recognized that inaugural year).
“Her influence will outlive her. This prize is about celebrating the contribution to humanity through the art of architecture. And such contribution tends to happen by challenging conventions,” said Alejandro Aravena, jury chair and 2016 laureate of Pritzker.
Two videos filmed at the Louvre Abu Dhabi in May are available. A condensed version captures ceremony highlights, including remarks from the jurors and from Liu (viewable above). The other documents the full 43-minute ceremony and can be viewed here.
“Architecture is closely intertwined with the fate of humanity—it will evolve and renew itself, as it has always been doing. As long as humanity does not perish, architecture will not either,” remarked Liu during his acceptance speech.
The 2026 laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize will be announced next March, marking the 48th edition of the award.
