“As a profession, we should be looking at ourselves in the mirror and recognizing the agency and leadership that we already have and embody that in our work—whether you're a sole practitioner or a large firm—because [climate-vulnerable] communities need us. One of the few professions that have the agency and the wherewithal to do this work is us. With the AIA’s Framework for Design Excellence—defined as being resilient, sustainable, healthy, and equitable—are the four things that defined good design of the 21st century, right? The natural evolution of that beyond 2030 is to understand that sustainability and resilience together are no longer enough. We must move toward regenerative design, which is healing versus curing. I think the profession needs to embrace the excellence that it already has in these categories and go beyond that.”
