Location: Roselawn Heights, Phoenix
Project size: 4,595 square feet

Program: Tucked behind a suburban home on an unusually deep lot is a small white block apartment building. This four-unit community of one-bedroom micro-apartments has no street presence, giving residents the sense that they are living in a hidden gem in the center of the city’s downtown core.

Design Solution: The isolation of the project naturally lent itself to the development of a private, tranquil experience away from the city’s hustle and bustle. To achieve this each unit is flanked with two private outdoors spaces–a courtyard at each entry, and a generous backyard and patio. These components act as an east and west buffer, providing a quiet atmosphere with natural light that filters through native mesquite trees in each outdoor space. Natural materials continue through the interior and create a simple palette that is honest to its construction. The T-shaped floor plan is enhanced by natural light and provides clear organization of space and function.

Structure and Materials: The hard exterior block is both its structure and primary material. The exterior walls extend inside as monolithic construction. These masonry walls contain foam insulation, serving as a thick thermal mass. This dense structure retains the cooler temperatures from the previous night, aiding in a cooling inertia effect that helps reduce energy costs.

Additional Information
Completion date: October 2023
