Location: St. Kilda East, Victoria, Australia
Project size: 527 square feet (new area); 731 square feet (ground level renovation)

Program: This project adds a second level to an existing single-story house, using a steel structure that was installed during an earlier renovation. The addition includes two bedrooms, a bathroom, and a garden, all elevated above the original home. Designed to bring in more space, light, and air, the new level improves livability without blocking views of the surrounding rooftops. A large, faceted window helps open the interior and introduces more daylight throughout. By building on the existing structure, the project avoids unnecessary demolition and waste. The addition also connects indoor and outdoor spaces and allows more light to reach the ground floor. Overall, the design expands the house in a way that supports a growing family, offering both independence for teenagers and comfortable shared spaces.

Design Solution: The design focuses on improving light and connection across the two-story house. An open staircase at the center organizes the plan, linking the main living spaces while allowing each room to maintain some independence. Positioned above the existing kitchen, the stair draws on the materials of the original house, and a sloped ceiling with skylights brings daylight deep into the shared areas.

U-channel glazing lines the exterior walls of the upper level. The use of translucent glass brings in consistent daylight while maintaining privacy, with operable windows placed strategically for views and cross ventilation. Set at a height of just under 8 feet, the glazing creates a sense of openness despite the compact footprint and simplifies the design of doors, joinery, and service zones.

The project emphasizes cost control and efficient use of materials. The exterior and interior are finished with relatively inexpensive, durable materials such as corrugated metal (mini-orb), bendable plywood, and wood wool panels. By building on the existing structure, the design minimizes demolition and structural changes. Only one new column was added to support the upper level, and the roof garden is carefully set between existing rafters to reduce impact.

Structure and Materials: The project prioritizes durable, low-impact materials and ease of reuse. Exterior cladding is fixed for simple replacement or recycling. Interior finishes emphasize renewable, low-VOC materials, including cork flooring and sustainably sourced hardwood plywood. Wood wool panels—made from wood fibers, cement, and recycled stone—are used at the stair for durability and acoustic performance. Plasterboard is used sparingly in favor of lower–embodied-energy alternatives such as plywood and hardwood veneer.
