Richard Meier's new model museum is located at Mana Contemporary, a cultural center and fine arts storage and handling facility that occupies a hulking former manufacturing complex in Jersey City, New Jersey.

On the evening of March 5, Richard Meier celebrated the opening of his new model museum in Jersey City, New Jersey. Guests from Manhattan arrived by coach buses, which whisked them below the Hudson River and across the state’s gritty edges to Mana Contemporary, a cultural center and fine arts storage and handling facility that occupies a hulking former manufacturing complex.

The collection, which was relocated to its new 15,000-square-foot quarters from a much smaller space in Long Island City, Queens, consists of books and magazines from Meier’s personal library, as well as hundreds of items, including architectural drawings and the architect’s sculptures and collages. The approximately 400 models range from a humble 1965 rendition of his seminal Smith house (that Meier made himself), to numerous models of the Getty Center in Los Angeles, including a massive 1/8-scale version that measures 18 feet by 10 feet and weighs 1,300 pounds. Meier shares the space with the Ana Meier Furniture Showroom, his daughter’s endeavor. The Richard Meier Model Museum is open by appointment every Friday beginning this spring. Reservations can be made through the office of Richard Meier & Partners, by emailing M.Museum@RichardMeier.com.
