Site size: 6.89 acres
Project size: 3,685 square feet
Location: A farm in rural western Tennessee.
Solution: By placing the structure close to the road to reduce erosion, the architects minimized environmental impact to the farmland in the vicinity.
Construction and materials: Applied Research's team of architects constructed the house out of heavy timber: Sawn and glu-laminated members compose the basic structure. Poured-in-placed concrete, steel fencing, and timber screens mark boundaries on the farmland. Wood floors and cabinets are used throughout, while in some rooms the flooring is marbled cork. Acting as a rainscreen, the exterior cladding of stained cypress boards over steel frames hangs from barn door tracks. The roof assembly contains a metal standing seam, ventilated roof over SIP panels and glu-lam rafters. Designed as a passive house, a high level of energy efficiency is gained by a highly insulated and well-sealed envelope, solar panels, and geothermal heating.
