The simple 6,400-square-foot Orange Memorial Park Recreation Building is an airy, light-filled multi-purpose room for cultural, recreational, celebratory, and educational activities. The visual transparency of the glazed facade on three sides connects the inner space with surrounding patios, merging indoor and outdoor activities.

The community center was conceived as a pavilion in a 23-acre park. The material palette features red and yellow cedar, basalt stone, and glass. The simple overall geometries of two rectangular masses are embellished with wood roof trusses.

The site orientation of the building utilizes daylight, while deep overhangs provide patio shade. Sun-protected fenestration allows for park views. The project’s energy performance is 15.2 percent more efficient than what is mandated by California’s stringent energy code.

Other green features include efficient lighting, recycled glass countertops and medium density fiberboard, and low VOC materials for paints, coatings, adhesives, and sealants.
