“One thing about working at SOM is that our engineers are integrated and approach every project with an almost equal level of importance. As an architect, it's important to have the humility to recognize that some of the best ideas for architecture might be from an engineering point of view. By shaping the building [400 Lake Shore] through an in-house wind tunnel that we have in our Chicago office, we learned that we could tune the building so that it moved significantly less. What we tried to do with the design was shape the building—not only so that you don’t need a damper or a hole—to significantly reduce the amount of concrete in the tower, and therefore also the carbon, because the structure didn't need to be quite as stiff.”
