BrandNu Design Studio founder Michael Ford joins Architectural Record’s DESIGN:ED podcast to discuss his moniker of the “Hip-Hop Architect,” mentoring young people through music, and the design of the forthcoming Hip Hop Museum in the Bronx.
“People are copying what young folks are doing in major cities across America. They're trying to walk like you and talk like you; they want to dress like you and do everything that you want to do. And so, you should bring that role as cultural validator, not an imitator, into new professions that you’re exploring, including architecture. I’m teaching young people to use their cultural genius, which has a gravitational force and shouldn’t be checked at the door because you want to be a quote-unquote architect.”
