Five days after the Museum of Modern Art announced it would raze the former home of the American Folk Art Museum (which it purchased in 2011) for a planned expansion, the controversy continues to simmer. Yesterday, MoMA’s chief curator of architecture and design broke his silence to speak with the Architect’s Newspaper, telling the journal that the choice was an “administrative, rather than a curatorial one” and that the decision was “painful” for admirers of the 12-year-old museum, designed by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects.

 

Since news broke of the Folk Art Museum’s impending demise, members of the design community have begun circulating petitions aimed at saving the acclaimed building. A blog called “Folk MoMA” has also surfaced on Tumblr as a digital protest of the decision.
